The IISH is working on a collaborative archival project with informal workers in the Netherlands. In collaboration with members and organisers of communities of informal domestic workers, this project aims to create, describe and present an online archive by and of the workers themselves. While a temporary project, we recognize the need to maintain the results also after the project phase and see it as a ‘pilot’ for future projects.
The project is coordinated by members of the Collection Development Department at the IISH, and is carried out in close cooperation with members of other departments at the IISH including the departments of Processing and Public Services. For this project we are looking for a

What will you be doing?
- You join and provide support to the project team, and liaise with the project partners, including informal domestic workers and community organizers. You organize regular meetings with the informal workers and other (IISH) colleagues to facilitate the project's progress and realize the project's objective.
- You help identifying the most suitable digital tools for collaborative archiving and (online) description, presentation, display, interaction, and possible other, and are the link between the workers, collection specialists and software specialists.
- Throughout the pilot phase of the project, you maintain thorough documentation for future learning purposes.
Besides your core tasks, we want to introduce you to the collection work of the IISH in general and see if there are possibilities to work together for a longer period.
Where will you be working?
You work in the Collection Development Department, which is responsible for acquisitions, and will be coached by one of our specialists. You also work together with staff members from the other departments of the IISH in a small team.
Some of the work will take place where it is most convenient for the domestic workers, other parts will take place at the IISH. The IISH building is a lively place in Amsterdam Oost where international visitors, researchers and collection staff meet.
What are we asking for?
- You have experience or affinity with community work, and with the subjects of informal labour, workers’ rights, and migration;
- You possess good planning and communications skills, plus skills in collaborating with diverse actors and in different situations;
- You have awareness of and preferably proficiency in archiving and record management applications and platforms, familiarity with software and digital tools related to catalogues and data visualization, and experience with qualitative and collaborative research methodologies;
- You are aware that you may be working with confidential information, and act prudently, protecting the privacy of the workers and organizers involved;
- You are a reliable, easily approachable, kind, socially aware, and committed person;
- You are willing and able to work outside of office hours, as most of the meetings with community members and organisers will be held during weekends or evenings to accommodate for their schedules.

Employment conditions
Depending on education and experience, the salary amounts to a minimum of €3.098 and a maximum of €4.257 gross per month for full-time employment (scale 9 collective agreement for Dutch Universities/KNAW) . This excludes 8% holiday allowance, 8.3% year-end bonus, travel allowance, internet and home working allowance and pension accrual with ABP.
