What you will be bringing

We’re looking for a candidate with the following background:

  • A PhD degree in demography, population studies, sociology, economics, human geography or other social science discipline, with at least 3 years of academic experience post-degree.
  • A strong track record of international publications in the broad field of international migration and/or immigrant incorporation.
  • Proven success in obtaining (inter-)national competitive grants.
  • Experience supervising PhD students and postdoctoral researchers.
  • Excellent social, communicative and leadership skills.
  • Excellent skills in quantitative methods, statistics and programming (Stata, R).
  • Excellent writing skills in English.
  • Knowledge of Dutch is an advantage, but not required.
  • Experience with outreach activities and public engagement.
  • A prominent network of national and/or international cooperative relationships.

You’ll work at NIDI, a research institute that is part of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW, ‘The Academy’) and affiliated with the University of Groningen. NIDI is celebrated for its interdisciplinary social science research on contemporary population issues. Our institute, housing about 70 scholars, is furthermore known for pioneering research, international orientation, a supportive atmosphere, collaborative and inclusive culture, and superior data infrastructure. As a Senior Researcher, you will be part of the Department of Migration and Migrants at NIDI, a dynamic team of approximately 15 senior and junior scientists (PhDs and Postdocs). We study a broad variety of topics related to migration and migrants, such as the causes of international migration and future scenarios, forced displacement, the integration of immigrants and their descendants into their new environments (e.g., intergroup relations, discrimination, segregation, inequality), as well as the impact of migration on the regions and societies from which migrants originate. Our team frequently holds meetings to discuss papers and welcomes both domestic and international guest speakers. It also serves as a hospitable venue for visiting scholars and students pursuing internships.

About NIDI
The Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI) is a leading European demographic research institute. NIDI is part of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and affiliated with the University of Groningen. It is located in the center of The Hague providing a unique and stimulating research environment in the broad field of population studies. Currently the staff of the institute consists of about 65 employees of different levels of seniority and organized in a rather horizontal structure within four thematic research groups. The working environment is highly international and NIDI provides ample opportunities for training and development.

 

Terms of employment
We offer a permanent position (with a potential probation period). The gross monthly salary ranges between € 4,332 and € 8,815 and will depend on the level of experience following the Dutch regulations for academic staff (CAO UNL).  This is exclusive of 8% vacation allowance, 8.3% year-end bonus, travel allowance, internet allowance, home working allowance and pension accrual with ABP.

 

The KNAW offers its staff an excellent package of secondary benefits. A package that meets the different needs of employees depending on their stage of life, lifestyle or career ambitions. For example, by working an extra two hours a week, it is possible to increase the number of days off from 29 to 41 days a year (with full-time employment). 

 

Non Dutch applicants are required to relocate to The Netherlands. If and when necessary, NIDI will apply for the residence permit. Non Dutch employees may qualify for a Tax break (30% Ruling).
