Location: The Hague
Max hours per week: 38,00
Max salary: 5.090
Duration of agreement: 2 jaar

Are you enthusiastic about working with impactful data? Do you have excellent data analysis skills? Do you have an expertise in survey methodology? Do you want to gain a unique experience in working for an international research infrastructure? We are looking for a new team member who can assist with developing a unique new dataset on migrants in the Netherlands. This is a great opportunity to work in a top-rated international research infrastructure.

What you will be doing

The NIDI aims to build a new 'migrant panel' by integrating complex data from surveys and registers into a unique multi-actor panel data set. Methodologically, a new path is being taken by developing, for the first time, a nationally representative, long-term, and publicly accessible panel on migrant groups. Theoretically, the project is innovative because it allows for a more convincing testing of a multitude of theories regarding the integration of migrant groups. Institutionally, the project explores new ways for data access, archiving, and dissemination, collaborating with both DANS and CBS. The panel being constructed will provide unique insights into the life courses of migrants and their children.

As a researcher/data analist, you will be responsible for harmonizing, analyzing, and integrating survey data sets, linking surveys to registers, and converting separate and complex register files into accessible panel data. Other tasks are documenting data, collaborating with CBS and NIDI researchers about the further development of the project, and exploring new ways to disseminate data (e.g., synthetic data).

Within this project, it is possible but not required to use the migrant panel for publication purposes. In doing so, you would be working together with the other team members of this project. Output will include mainly descriptive policy-relevant publications and presentations to seminars at NIDI and CBS. Moreover, the candidate can make contributions to team publications containing more explanatory analyses for international scientific journals.

You will be part of a small team at NIDI, collaborating with institutional partners (CBS and DANS - KNAW). The team currently consists of Matthijs Kalmijn, Frank van Tubergen, Helga de Valk, Ricarda Brakman (DANS), and Ruben van Galen (CBS).

What you will be contributing

You have (recently) obtained a Research Master (junior position) or PhD (senior position) in a relevant discipline. Examples of relevant disciplines are sociology, social geography, data science, statistics, economics, psychology, epidemiology, and demography. You possess strong quantitative data analytical skills and advanced proficiency in STATA. Advanced proficiency in SPSS/SAS/R can also be considered if there is a commitment to learn STATA. Experience with analyzing surveydata and/or registerdata is required. Some degree of proficiency in Dutch (or commitment to learn Dutch) is an advantage because large parts of the data documentation are written in Dutch.

How to apply and more information
We kindly request a brief motivational letter, a CV, and a sample publication. Please also specify your proficiency in STATA or other relevant skills and your proficiency in Dutch.

Upon receiving your application, we may contact you by phone for a brief introductory conversation.

We expect you can start approximately September 1, 2024. The deadline for submitting your application is June 1, 2024.

If you want more information, please send an e-mail Prof. Dr. Matthijs Kalmijn, kalmijn[at]nidi.nl, Theme leader Families & Generations.
